Subtext is a free iPad app (*Coming soon to Android and the web!) that allows classroom groups to exchange ideas in the pages of digital texts. You can also layer in enrichment materials, assignments and quizzes—opening up almost limitless opportunities to engage student and foster analysis and writing skills.

In addition to reading novels in Subtext, the teacher can create their own ebook from webpages. Compile these using the free Readlist website.
  • What’s a Readlist? A group of web pages—articles, recipes, course materials, anything—bundled into an e-book you can send to your Kindle, iPad, or iPhone.
  • PDFs can be copied and pasted into a Word Doc. and converted to ePub using the free 2EPUB online converter. Great tool to use when wanting to have students read a Readworks.org passage in Subtext!

Students can be 'in' a book with classmates or even with students in a different class, school, state, or country! It really is a fantastic tool for creating an interactive reading experience that allows groups to exchange ideas in the pages of a digital text. Lots of opportunities to develop analysis and writing skills as well.

The Common Core emphasizes close reading, critical thinking, and writing. Engage students and develop these skills using Subtext's:
  1. Notes and tags to highlight core concepts and link to text
  2. Support reading, analysis, and writing loop
  3. Chapter-end writing prompt
